Effect of local modes on equipment response
Abstract
It is shown that idealized, lumped-mass models of primary structures may lead to significant overestimation of the peaks in floor response spectra used for design of equipment and piping in nuclear power plants. In real structures, due to the effect of local modes the vibratory energy is dispersed in a band of frequencies around each mode, which reduces the effect of resonance in the equipment response. This effect is investigated in this paper by way of a numerical example and parametric study. It is shown that refined modeling of primary structures may lead to significant reduction in the peaks of floor response spectra.
