Abstract

The increasing use of clayey soils in civil engineering practice in different environments necessicitates a better rational understanding of the physico–chemical mechanisms controlling their behaviour. Since both solid and liquid wastes are increasingly mixed with soils, soil being an effective medium of disposal for industrial wastes, studies on the modification of properties of soils become important. In this article, the effects of type and amount of clay minerals, the nature of pore fluid, cation and anion exchanges and organic matter are investigated. It is shown that clay properties are modified to different extents and by different mechanisms depending on the pollutant parameters.
