Abstract

Old city walls on the eastern side of the Sabarmati river and the present form high-rise structures and residential colonies on the western bank of the river have proved recently an alarming situation for stability of foundations of structures in Ahmedabad. Washing out of residential colonies and approaches to bridges, imminent danger to stability of bridges and river bank structures were witnessed just before three years. Based on studies for the river flow characteristics and bank deposits, analysis reveals adopting the reinforced earth structures for protection against loosing the stability of structures founded on river banks. This proposition besides providing an economical solution has extended waterfront development, additional civic activity spaces on both banks and offers a well-integrated programme of environmental aspects related to river bank structures.
