Abstract

Investigations were conducted into the behavior of two concreteblock retaining walls, one a conventional T-type block wall and the other a newly developed H-type block wall. A deformation and a failure pattern in the retaining walls subjected to both surcharge loads and back-fill water pressure were measured by a prototype field test. It was observed that almost the same earth pressure and displacement were generated on both block retaining walls. The experimental results also indicated that the H-type block retaining wall was able to stand a larger deformation than the T-type and had a higher toughness.
