Abstract

The mudstone in southern Taiwan is a weak rock. However, it seems likely that compaction of the excavated mudstone will improve its engineering behavior, and then it can be used. The tested sample is unweathered mudstone obtained from a new cut along a road. The engineering properties measured from the tests are strength, compressibility, and swelling pontential. In order to simulate short-term and long-term conditions, both as-compacted and soaked tests are performed. Statistical correlation between the engineering properties and testing parameters are then established. Hence, the prediction of engineering properties of compacted mudstone can be made from the laboratory results.
