Abstract

Decomposed granite soil, a representative residual soil in Japan, is widely distributed in the western part of the country. Natural and man-made slopes of decomposed granite soil, which are stable under normal dry conditions, fail easily due to rainfall. On the basis of many data from consolidation and shear tests on various decomposed granite soils, the influence of initial water content and soaking on compressibility and shear characteristics were clarified.
