Improvement of geotechnical properties of residual sand with rice husk ash
Abstract
This paper presents the results of a series of laboratory tests carried out on residual sand from Ile–lfe (Nigeria) with various percentages of rice husk ash. It has been found that rice husk ash can potentially improve the various geotechnical properties such as unconfined compressive strength, California bearing ratio, cohesion and shear strength of residual sand. Moreover, the results of this study show that rice husk ash can be substitute for cement, lime or bitumen in soil stabilization. It recommends that 16% rice husk ash is optimum binder for this residual sand investigated and this stabilized soil can be used for sub–base and base materials for highway construction
