The progressive failure of the rock mass surrounding an opening by boundary element method
Abstract
When an underground opening is excavated, the rock mass surrounding the opening will be progressively damaged due to ground pressure. This is one of important fields to be investigated in geomechanics. In the present paper, boundary element method is developed to simulate and estimate the progressive failure (post-failure) behaviour of rock. To guarantee the stability and convergence of numerical method, an optimum method is used to control the load and deformation of rock. Some examples are solved to illustrate the efficiency of boundary element method and its application to underground opening.
