Abstract

Probabilistic methods are now increasingly used in geomechanics to assess the safety of earth slopes, retaining walls and dams under seismic excitations. In this paper, the results of a preliminary study carried out at Imperial college on the safety assessment of propped embedded cantilever retaining walls are presented. The problems associated with such probabilistic analyses are identified and solutions are suggested for a few selected problems.
