Abstract

As part of a large urbanization scheme, circular artificial islands were hydraulically sandfilled at the border of Itaipu lagoon, near Rio de Janeiro city in Brazil. To investigate the mode of settlement of the soft peaty deposit where the islands were to be created, an instrumented test fill was constructed. This paper compares the observed fill behaviour which results obtained using the classical one-dimensional Terzaghi’s theory, the finite strain one-dimensional consolidation theory proposed by Gibson et al. (1981) and the two-dimensional coupled consolidation theory developed by Biot’s (1941) .
