On the applicability of a quasi-linear finite element model to buoyancy flow in an artificial aquifer - Validation against field performance
Abstract
A sophisticated numerical model was developed to calculate the time-marching temperature field in an artificial aquifer for thermal energy storage. As density effects are very important for the flow field in the aquifer, a very stable and accurate iteration procedure is required. NEWTON's method is used combined with a relaxation procedure and a second order time integration scheme to account for the nonlinearities and coupling of the flow field and the temperature field. The numerical model was validated in detail against measurement data from field experiments.
