Emergency models to study the overtopping of a natural dam formed by a landslide: The case of Val Pola rockslide (Italy)
Abstract
A description is given and results presented of mathematical and physical simulations performed to foresee in a quick but sufficiently accurate way the consequences of the probable overtopping of a natural dam formed by a landslide that obstructed the higher reach of river Adda on July 28th, 1987. The obtained information allowed the Ministry for Civil Protection to decide and operate a "controlled" overtopping and to come out of an emergency situation one month after the landslide occurrence.
