Abstract

The general arrangement of the air and fan drifts for the Selby Wistow Mine shafts is described. Site investigation data and the reasons for choosing a freezing scheme for the temporary works are summarized. The general arrangement of the freezing scheme is shown. Particular construction details were incorporated into the air and fan drifts to accommodate the freezing scheme and these are indicated together with the freezing and construction programme. Measurements of frost heave and thaw settlement made during the construction of the drifts are presented. The effects of frost heave and thaw settlement on the air and fan drifts are discussed and recommendations made for future freezing schemes.
