Abstract

The sinking of a ventilation shaft to serve a new 14.7 km long railway tunnel being driven below the Rockies had commenced with the aid of dewatering. The drawdown achieved with the dewatering wells enabled the shaft to be sunk to a depth of 62.5m. Resort was then made to ground freezing to facilitate shaft sinking to the bedrock level of approximately 95m.
