Abstract

A one dimensional model for predicting frost heave in a finite column of a saturated granular soil is presented. The model is based on the theory of secondary heave due to Miller. It embodies a quasi–static approximation for the temperature and the water pressure profiles. The model is applicable to the full range of overburden pressures, including zero. Although at low overburden pressures a change to a primary heaving model is necessary when the frozen fringe disappears. The results agree well with measurements by a number of researchers.
