Laboratory measurement of permeability in rock
Abstract
Although laboratory permeability measurements can be made under carefully controlled and systematically varied test conditions, two questions underlie the extrapolation of laboratory data to field conditions. Do the laboratory determinations accurately reflect the test specimen properties? And, does the behavior of test specimens used for the laboratory measurements realistically correspond to in-situ behavior? The difficulties associated with addressing these questions are particularly severe for materials such as salt, in which very low permeability is governed primarily by flow through fractures.
