Abstract

The vibrations induced in the boom of a selective tunnelling machine have been monitored and are shown to relate to the design of cutting head used. A computer aided design (CAD) package produced by British Coal was found to predict the vibration and force levels obtained accurately within normal machine operating conditions. The application of high pressure water jets to a cutting head significantly reduces the vibration levels measured on the boom.
