Abstract

The stresses created by the freezing of a saturated soil are studied. The case of elastic soil and that of elastoplastic soil are considered. In each case, the closure of a gallery driven in the frozen soil is compared to that of a gallery driven in the same soil, unfrozen. A closed-form solution is obtained.
