Abstract

The development of yield zones around circular openings under the presence of imperfections in the form of local weaknesses such as joints and fissures were investigated by laboratory and numerical simulations. In the finite element studies, weaknesses were represented by elements with a lower strength than the surrounding elements or by stratified elements with orientation dependent strength (model introduced by Nova and Sacchi, 1979 ). It was found that the number of weaknesses and their locations or proximity to the opening are important factors which influence the development of different types of failure mechanisms.
