Abstract

The purpose of this calculation is to determine the temperatures near the waste canisters in an underground repository. The time history of the highest temperature at the surface of the waste canister was calculated. The maximum of this time history curve is the maximum salt temperature (MST), which is one of the critical factors that controls the number of waste canisters to be emplaced per unit area of the repository. The essence of this paper is that the MST can be accurately determined by a simple semi-analytical model rather than a three-dimensional finite different or a finite element model.
