Large-scale glaciotectonic deformation of soft sediments: A case study of a late Weichselian sequence in western Iceland
Abstract
An investigation of the glacial geology of the Melabakkar-Asbakkar coastal cliffs in the lower Borgarfjőrdur region, western Iceland, revealed that the sequence has been subject to extensive glaciodynamic deformations. The stratigraphical and sedimentological evidence suggests that the sequence was deposited in an isostatically depressed fjord basin. The glacial stratigraphy of the sequence is briefly described and a model for the development of the depositional basin is outlined. A brief description of deformational structures is given, and the chronological control of glacial events is discussed. It is concluded that the glaciotectonic features developed in proand subglacial unfrozen soft sediments.
