Abstract

Morphological, structural and mechanical analysis of neoglacial push-ridges in Iceland. The stratigraphy, morphology, external and internal structures and mechanical characteristics of a series of ice-pushed ridges in eastern Iceland are described. The ridges were formed by a glacier advance into penecontemporaneous sediments in 1890. The structural elements can be divided into two groups: subglacial extension and proglacial compression. A stage-by-stage reconstruction of the evolution of the structures is modelled, and demonstrates clear relationships between the resultant structures and style of deformation, the mechanical properties of the sediments and meltwater production.
