On the mechanics of glaciotectonic contortion of clays
Abstract
Using the symmetry concept in connection with findings on failure mechanisms, glaciotectonic contortion processes in a Pleistocene stiff, fissured clay are derived from actual macro (joint size) and micro (particle size) fabrics. The results contradict conventional understanding of shear-induced failure genesis. Joint development is shown to be caused by extension within compressive stress fields. Assuming basal sliding velocities as measured recently, the results demonstrate that the ground was frozen at the time of glaciotectonic deformation.
