Abstract

Landslides are a common and serious problem in the mountainous regions of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, and along the Danube River and its tributaries. At least 1,000 landslides have damaged roads in Poland; 548 villages and towns in Czechoslovakia are at risk. Nine villages in Bulgaria have been abandoned and 12 others are in danger from landsliding. Hungary’s largest iron and steel center along the Danube has been adversely affected by a landslide 1,300 m long. Sporadically, people have been killed by landslides since 1960, at least 11 of them in Bulgaria.
