Abstract

This paper discusses landslide problems, especially debris flows in the mountainous regions of Kazakhstan in the northern and western Tien Shan Mountains, the Dzungarian Alatau Range, and the Altai Mountains. The extent and economic significance of debris flows and landslides in these areas are different and depend on a variety of factors. Protective measures to mitigate and reduce the hazard have been developed mainly in the northern Tien Shan Mountains. The cost of these structures and landslide damage exceeds $500 million.
