Abstract

This review of geological and geotechnical conditions relevant to landsliding from northwestern Yugoslavia to Greece and Cyprus has been made to establish and emphasize the most common situations where landslides occur. The area under consideration is complex geologically with very different mechanisms and size of landslide events. Activities of various governmental and professional bodies in Yugoslavia, Greece, and Cyprus are discussed briefly to establish a background for planning landuse and adequate legislation. No figures are available for the extent or financial value of landslide problems, but the damage is substantial.
