Abstract

The heavy oil and bitumen resources of Alberta and Saskatchewan form a huge resource containing approximately two trillion barrels of oil. In order to economically produce this oil, it is often necessary to inject steam (sometimes with additives) into the reservoirs to raise the temperatures and lower the oil viscosity (which can exceed one million centipoise at twenty five degrees). Because of imposed temperature gradient and chemical incompatibilities between the injection fluid and the formation fluid, and tne injection fluid and the formation mineralogy, a number of geochemical reactions can occur and significantly change the reservoir properties and ultimately oil production.
