Abstract

The current use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education continues to change how teaching and learning occurs and how schools are managed. This means schools need to go beyond adopting new technologies in simplistic or one-dimensional ways. In this chapter, a school-building framework is presented for schools to become AI-ready, and to achieve this in a sustainable, equitable, and meaningfully pedagogic manner for K-12 AI education. Most recently published literature on AI and Education has been used to inform the AI-ready school framework. AI Readiness has been used to describe an all-encompassing school-level transformation, including staff capacity, technology, curriculum, ethics, and school systems and structures. The interrelated five phases of the framework are: (1) Capacity Building and Educator Empowerment, (2) Infrastructure Development and Data Readiness, (3) Curriculum Redesign and Pedagogical Integration, (4) Ethical Governance and Policy Alignment, and (5) Evaluation, Scaling, and Continuous Improvement. This arrangement of activities provides schools a pathway for progressing from patchy or fragmented AI adoption to comprehensive institutional AI readiness. The improvement of educator professionalism, the responsible use of institutional or school data, and the need for incremental change to address the challenges of AI adoption, all emphasize the framework&s;s humanistic and inclusive values.
