Abstract

In heavy machinery equipment, the assembly of the backhoe such as hinge bush play’s a critical role in structural integrity, operational efficiency and life span. This work provided a detailed information for evaluating the structural and fatigue performance of welded hinge bush component which is mainly used in the assembly of backhoe. The main structure of the assembly of the backhoe and the hinge bush with welded joint is modeled by using CAD software and the simulation is carried out. The semi-elliptical crack is generated by using a fracture tool on the critical areas of the welded joints to determine the stress intensity factor distribution of three different mode region of the crack, that helps to predict whether the crack may propagate or not. To prevent unexpected failure in welded joints, the fatigue analysis is simulated. However, the welded component is the weakest strength in a structure, making their evaluation is essential to determine their strength, durability, ability to withstand cyclic loads and prevent premature failure of the welded component. The tensile, bending and torsional test specimen were made as per the ASTM standard by using different parameters of Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding such as current, voltage and speed to determine the maximum load, ultimate tensile strength, percentage of elongation, maximum shear strength, torque and twist angle.
