Modelling of hollow cylinders with auxetic lattice structures
Abstract
This study investigates the axial compression behaviour of hollow auxetic cylinder structures (HACS) with different auxetic lattice patterns such as arrowhead, star, and chiral auxetic cells. Cylindrical models of the same dimensions are prepared and their deformation patterns are examined. Poisson’s ratio is calculated through quasi-static finite element models. The influences of the structural parameters such as wall thickness on the compression characteristics, and minimum negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) value of HACS are also investigated. The finite element model has been validated by replicating previous research works. The influence of two polymeric materials, ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) and PLA (polylactic acid), on Poisson’s ratio was investigated. The results indicate that Poisson’s ratio remains largely unaffected by the choice of material.
