Abstract

It is paramount to understand the behaviour of thin-walled beams with different airfoil sections as they find their applications in the critical areas such as space, wind turbine blades and aeronautics. In the present work, we have adopted our previously developed coupled mathematical model for comparing the static and dynamic attributes of a thin-walled anisotropic beam with various airfoil cross-sections. In this regard, four different sections namely box (rectangular), biconvex, symmetric and unsymmetric airfoil profiles are considered. The impact of structural tailoring technique on these beams with different sections is presented for circumferential asymmetric stiffness (CAS) configuration. All the non-classical effects such as primary and secondary warping and transverse shear were considered. Proper care is taken to maintain the accuracy of the present model by validating thoroughly with the results available in the literature. A parametric comparison is presented on the static and dynamic fronts among these sections. The static responses of the beams with various sections are presented at different ply angles. The variation of stiffness parameters for various sections considered, is also displayed. The free vibration behaviour of these beams for the first four modes is presented at different ply angles. The impact of bending-torsion coupling for both static and dynamics is also highlighted and presented for all the sections.
