Performance Analysis of Single-Input Fuzzy-based Variable Speed Wind Energy System during Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Faults
Abstract
This paper examines the Wind Energy System equipped with Doubly-fed Induction Generator (DFIG) that operates at variable speed during abrupt power outage. All possible grid faults, symmetrical (LLL and LLLG) and asymmetrical faults (LL, LG, and LLG), are considered for study. The system comprises a DC link connecting an energy storage system between the DC side of a pair of converters between the rotor and grid. The RSC and GSC are controlled by controllers that use single-input fuzzy logic to figure out cascaded loops. This makes dynamic control faster and more accurate. This work is completely simulated using MATLAB/Simulink to validate all the fault conditions. The performance analysis shows that grid faults, both symmetrical and asymmetrical, significantly impact all parameters of the Wind Energy System (WES) based on DFIG. Asymmetrical faults cause unbalanced conditions and fluctuating outputs, while symmetrical faults cause severe voltage drops and higher current surges, leading to system instability. These disturbances emphasize the need for resilient control strategies to maintain the parameters and ensure reliable system operation during fault conditions.
