Abstract

Chapter 5 presents the foundations of Industry 5.0 as a combination of human-centricity and sustainable development. The aim of this analysis is to illustrate a qualitative shift in the human–technology relationship: from models where work was subordinated to organizational structures and machinery, through phases of automation and digitalization that reduced human involvement in production, to a paradigm in which technology enhances human capabilities rather than replacing them. It is emphasized that human-centricity is inextricably linked to the green transition, since environmental objectives influence job roles, work organization, required competencies, safety, and social acceptance of industrial changes. The chapter further explores the evolution of the human role in production systems and identifies key competencies for Industry 5.0, spanning cognitive, digital, analytical, creative, social, adaptive, and ethical domains. New forms of human–machine collaboration are presented, alongside models for supervising AI-driven systems and organizational changes aimed at enhancing flexibility and promoting interdisciplinary team structures. An essential element of this analysis is the integration of occupational health and safety and employee well-being into the design of socio-technical systems. Furthermore, the chapter addresses sustainable development and the green transition in the context of strategic industrial objectives, including the circular economy, decarbonization, and resource efficiency. In this chapter, Industry 5.0 is portrayed as a paradigm where technological development, environmental responsibility, and the human role are mutually reinforcing, forming the basis for resilient, socially accepted, and sustainable production systems.
