Man-Made Healers
Abstract
Since the end of the nineteenth century, a wide range of synthetic medications has emerged. Some, such as aspirin, were developed from a “natural” medicine. Others, notably cisplatin or the sulfa drugs, were fortuitous discoveries. Many are developments of existing drugs – the fentanyl family, for example. Painkiller abuse has been a real problem in some countries, often featuring the fentanyls. Recently, suzetrigine, a painkiller which works through a different route, has been reported.
