Abstract

Chemistry underpins bodily appearance, whether hair (shampoo), skin (sunscreen, face powder, and lipstick), and hair (shampoos and waving), not to mention nail varnish and toothpaste. When it comes to smell, there&s;s mouthwash, deodorants, and particularly perfumes. Perfumes go back thousands of years, and the craft of perfumery depends on both chemicals from nature and synthetics. Recent research suggests that incense may be psychoactive, whilst chemicals in rosemary improve memory, and there are indications that the presence of certain odorants may be diagnostic for some diseases.
