Abstract

Organizations transform resources into analytics capabilities to gain competitive advantages. Following the resource-based view (RBV), the three types of resources, namely (1) physical capital resources, (2) human capital resources and (3) organizational capital resources, are discussed in terms of how they correspondingly turn into (1) technology capabilities, (2) people capabilities and (3) culture capabilities for data analytics competences. Real-world case studies illustrate how XDel Singapore transforms physical capital resources into technology capabilities, how Inditex and Chow Tai Fook equip their human resources with analytics capabilities, and how Agoda use their organizational resources to build culture capabilities for analytics. Along the roadmap of organizations becoming analytically mature, there are five stages: (1) prerequisites to analytical competition, (2) prove-it detour, (3) analytical aspirations, (4) analytical companies, and (5) analytical competitors. Project objectives of each of the stages are highlighted. Future trends of data analytics are also discussed.
