Synthesis and Biomedical Applications of Biofunctionalized Metal Nanoparticles and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles
Abstract
This chapter discusses the properties and characteristics of metal nanoparticles, emphasizing aspects like improved biocompatibility and targeting capabilities. Further, it explains covalent bioconjugation to surface coatings, which focuses on a specific technique for attaching biomolecules to metal nanoparticles, explaining covalent bonding for surface modification. Later, the chapter deals with the biomedical applications of metal nanoparticles and the diverse uses in medicine. It further breaks down applications for specific types of metals like Ag, Au, Cu, and Pt. Biofunctionalized metal oxide nanoparticles are another interesting area of study. The chapter enhances their biocompatibility, specificity, and efficacy for various biomedical applications. It delves into the synthesis methods of ZnO , TiO 2 , CuO , and FeO nanoparticles. Furthermore, the biomedical applications of these, including antimicrobial activity, drug delivery, anti-tumor effects, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast enhancement, are comprehensively discussed. The insights provided in this chapter underscore the potential of biofunctionalized metal and metal oxide nanoparticle as promising materials for advancing healthcare and biomedical research.
