Abstract

Rodent models have been indispensable in advancing the understanding of prion diseases, fatal neurodegenerative disorders caused by the misfolding of the cellular prion protein (PrP C ) into the pathogenic isoform PrP Sc . These models have been pivotal in elucidating disease mechanisms, strain variation, species barriers, and routes of neuroinvasion, while also serving as platforms for diagnostic development and therapeutic evaluation.
