Metal Alloy Photocatalysts for Conversion of CO2 to Chemicals
Abstract
Metal alloy photocatalysts are being recognized as very promising materials for the efficient conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into useful compounds. These materials have the potential to address the issue of CO 2 emissions and contribute to sustainable practices. This chapter delves into the principles, progress, and applications of metal alloy photocatalysts in CO 2 conversion. Photocatalysis, which is powered by light-induced processes on semiconductor surfaces, provides an environmentally friendly option for chemical synthesis, energy production, and environmental cleanup. Metal alloys, especially those that combine plasmonic and catalytic metals, provide improved optical characteristics and catalytic efficiency in comparison to single-metal counterparts. The interaction between plasmonic and catalytic metals enhances charge separation, improves the interaction of CO 2 molecules with photocatalysts, and enhances the absorption of visible light, resulting in an effective and selective CO 2 photoconversion. This chapter discusses several alloy compositions and synthesis procedures, emphasizing their impact on photocatalytic performance. It shows that the composition of alloys plays a crucial role in the activity and selectivity of the CO 2 photoreduction process, highlighting the potential of metal alloy photocatalysts in achieving sustainable CO 2 conversion.
