Single-Atom Alloy Catalysts for Environmental Remediation
Abstract
Over the past decades, the adverse effects of industrialization and urbanization have had a negative impact on human health and the environment; they have all become a common topic and a point for research and development for highly effective and efficient remediation means. Industrialization has resulted in a significant increase in environmental pollution caused by volatile organic emissions from chemical industries, an increase in emerging or endocrine-disrupting chemicals in water and a rise in lethal gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NO x ). Designing and developing cost, energy, and time-effective environmental catalytic processes in this context means minimizing or completely eradicating organic pollutants. The advancement and use of catalysts have shown this ability; they not only degrade pollutants but also fast-track the process and reduce the impact of secondary metabolites. Catalysts, in particular, atomic site catalysts, have been shown to have remarkable catalytic effects in environmental remediation. This chapter focuses on the structural and catalytic impact of different types of atomic site catalysts, including single-cluster catalysts, single-atom catalysts, and single-atom alloy catalysts. Single-atom alloys will mainly be discussed in terms of their impact on environmental remediation.
