Metal Alloy-Based Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Production
Abstract
Electrocatalysts are key to enabling clean energy conversion for a sustainable energy future. Electrochemical reactions, particularly hydrogen evolution reactions, have attracted significant attention due to their potential role in producing green hydrogen (H 2 ) as a clean energy carrier. This chapter explores metal alloy-based electrocatalysts as H 2 production catalysts for water splitting. Fundamentals of water splitting, kinetics parameters, and alloy catalysts—including binary, ternary, high entropy, and alloys containing sulphides, phosphides, and nitrides—are discussed. We deliberate different approaches for synthesising these alloy catalysts and the potential for nanoporous catalysts through dealloying. We conclude the chapter with an overview of future perspectives for metal alloy-based hydrogen electrocatalysts.
