New Frontiers in Meiotic Recombination to Develop Climate-resilient Crops
Abstract
This chapter explores the importance of meiotic recombination in crop development, particularly in the face of climate change challenges. It provides an overview of meiosis as a fundamental process in crop breeding, highlighting the role of meiotic recombination in generating genetic diversity. Advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms (including gene regulation, protein interactions, DNA repair pathways, chromosomal crossover, and epigenetic modifications) and regulation of meiotic recombination are discussed, along with its relevance to developing climate-resilient crops. Strategies for enhancing meiotic recombination in crops, including genetic approaches and genome-editing techniques, are examined. Case studies showcasing successful crop improvement through meiotic recombination are presented, focusing on drought-tolerant rice (e.g., Oryza sativa ), heat-resistant wheat ( Triticum aestivum ), and disease-resistant tomatoes ( Solanum lycopersicum ), highlighting their development through advanced breeding techniques. The chapter concludes by discussing the potential applications of meiotic recombination in crop breeding, ethical considerations, and public acceptance, as well as technological limitations and research gaps. Overall, this chapter provides insights into the future prospects of meiotic recombination research for improving crop productivity and resilience in the face of changing climatic conditions. However, addressing ethical considerations, public acceptance, and technological limitations remains crucial for the successful application of these advancements.
