Climate Change and Stress Mitigation Strategies in Plants
Abstract
Climate change poses serious challenges to global agriculture and ecosystems, including a variety of environmental pressures that significantly influence plant growth, productivity, and survival. This chapter investigates the multiple consequences of climate change on plants, concentrating on various stressors such as drought, flooding, heat, salinity, and extreme weather events. It explores the fundamental physiological, pharmacological, and molecular mechanisms that mediate plant responses to these stressors, explaining the complex interaction of signaling pathways and gene regulatory networks involved in stress sensing and adaptation. The chapter also examines innovative solutions to decrease the harmful consequences of stress brought on by the climate on plants. This chapter covers a wide range of methods, from conventional breeding practices to cutting-edge biotechnological interventions, such as the application of stress-tolerant plant types, omics technology, and gene editing. It also discusses ecosystem management techniques and sustainable farming methods that support plant resilience to climate change. The chapter concludes with a review of genome-editing techniques as a potential solution, highlighting the need for comprehensive steps to address the increasing dangers that climate change poses to plants. It aims to provide comprehensive knowledge and practical insights that are critical for conserving plant ecosystems in an era of unprecedented environmental change.
