Abstract

Initialization is a critical phase in metaheuristic algorithms, laying the foundation for efficient exploration of the search space. This chapter examines the impact of various initialization strategies on the performance of metaheuristic techniques, considering both convergence speed and solution quality. A comprehensive review of recent literature reveals a growing interest in this area, especially driven by its relevance to modern applications in machine learning, deep learning, and big data. The chapter explores various initialization methods, including chaos-based, clustering-based, low-discrepancy sequences, heuristic-driven techniques, and emerging hybrid approaches. Each method is analyzed in terms of its strengths, limitations, and typical application domains. Comparative tables and statistical insights provide a clearer picture of how initialization affects algorithmic behavior. Emphasis is placed on understanding the trade-off between exploration and exploitation during the early stages of the search. This discussion aims to guide researchers, particularly those new to the field, in making more informed decisions when designing metaheuristics for complex optimization problems.
