Abstract

This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of various initialization methodologies for global optimization algorithms, emphasizing their importance in enhancing algorithmic performance. Initialization plays a crucial role in determining the convergence speed and solution quality in metaheuristic search processes. The chapter begins by outlining the nature and taxonomy of stochastic global optimization algorithms, drawing inspiration from diverse sources, including evolutionary processes, physical phenomena, mathematics, and social behaviors. It then categorizes and evaluates several initialization strategies, including random, heuristic, knowledge-based, deterministic, oversampling, and hybrid approaches. For each method, the chapter discusses operational principles, implementation considerations, and a comparative analysis of their advantages and disadvantages. Emphasis is placed on how these strategies affect exploration, exploitation, diversity, and convergence. Practical insights are supported by summary tables and exercises in MATLAB, providing readers with tools to experiment with and understand the impact of initialization on real optimization problems.
