Abstract

This chapter explores the critical role of initialization strategies in the performance of two widely used population-based metaheuristic algorithms: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Differential Evolution (DE). While often overlooked, the method by which initial solutions are generated has a significant impact on the convergence behavior, exploration capabilities, and overall success of optimization processes. We provide a detailed examination of three advanced initialization techniques: Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS), Opposition-Based Learning (OBL), and Chaos-Based Sampling, highlighting their theoretical foundations, practical implementations, and ability to enhance population diversity. Each method is integrated into the canonical structures of PSO and DE, resulting in six algorithmic variants that are benchmarked against the multimodal Ackley function. A comparative analysis using statistical measures and convergence plots reveals that proper initialization can significantly influence optimization outcomes. Notably, OBL consistently improves performance in both PSO and DE configurations. This chapter serves as a comprehensive resource for researchers and practitioners seeking to enhance metaheuristic efficiency through informed population initialization.
