Abstract

This chapter presents the implementation of diversity indicators in two widely used population-based metaheuristic algorithms: Differential Evolution (DE) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Specifically, we focus on incorporating a dimension-wise diversity metric to monitor and enhance the algorithms&s; performance. Diversity is a critical factor in avoiding premature convergence and maintaining a healthy balance between exploration and exploitation during the optimization process. We provide detailed explanations and MATLAB implementations that integrate the diversity metric into the main components of DE and PSO. The code tracks the population&s;s spread across each decision variable, allowing real-time assessment of how well the algorithm explores the search space. Readers are guided through the initialization, evolution, and diversity monitoring stages for both algorithms. In addition, practical exercises are included to encourage experimentation with alternative diversity metrics and to analyze their impact on convergence behavior. By the end of this chapter, readers will gain hands-on experience and deeper insight into how diversity metrics can be leveraged to improve the robustness and effectiveness of metaheuristic optimization techniques.
