Abstract

This chapter focuses on the essential parts of preparing a patient for a computed tomography (CT) examination. Because the patient has to remain completely still during the CT examination, usually a heavy sedation or a short general anaesthesia is performed. A general clinical workup – including a range of blood tests – depending on the age of the animal and the information supplied by the referring veterinarian, should precede the CT examination. In patients suspected of having neoplastic disease, a chest radiograph is also required prior to anaesthesia. Checking haemostasis is necessary before CT-guided biopsies are performed. Metal objects may affect the CT images and should be removed prior to the exam. This chapter also delves into the anaesthesia/sedation protocols necessary for CT scanning.
