Abstract

This chapter explains the specific characteristics of computed tomography (CT) images, the foundation for effective imaging to meet the wide range of clinical requirements. The value, and sometimes the challenge, of CT imaging is that the various image characteristics can be changed and adjusted for each procedure. It is the combination of individual image characteristics affecting the visibility of specific anatomical structures and the different tissues, including signs of pathology. The chapter explains the meaning of tomographic; digital; a matrix of voxels, and of contrast; and the visualization of soft tissue and how this is compared to radiography. It discusses the details shown on CT imagery, blurring, the effect on visibility compared to radiography and controlling factors. It also delves into noise, artefacts and general characteristics.
