Abstract

Enzymes are biocatalysts that play an essential role in countless processes, including the pharmaceutical, food, and biofuel industries. However, their limited stability, recovery, and reusability often pose challenges in industrial applications. Enzyme immobilization addresses these issues, making it a fundamental component of bioprocessing. This technique utilizes a variety of support matrices, such as gels, beads, membranes, and nanoparticles. Common methods include adsorption, covalent binding, and entrapment, each offering distinct advantages and disadvantages. The choice of immobilization method depends on the specific enzyme and its intended application. Immobilized enzymes exhibit enhanced stability, often withstanding harsher conditions than their free counterparts. In the pharmaceutical industry, they are utilized in the synthesis of drugs and the development of diagnostic tools. 342 In food processing, they aid in the production of beverages, cheese, and various bioactive compounds. Moreover, they are instrumental in biofuel production, environmental remediation, and the advancement of biocatalysis in green chemistry. As the biotechnology field advances, enzyme engineering remains a vital component for achieving sustainability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in enzyme production and application.
